Global powerhouse in electrical engineering and electronics with innovative environmental caring technology and transparent business management, Siemens Ltd. Seoul (SLS) (Josef Meilinger, President and CEO, www.siemens.co.kr) won the national standardization president’s award at the ‘2009 World Standards Day Ceremony’, held at the Daehan Construction Hall in Nonhyeon-dong today. This year’s ceremony, hosted by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy’s Korean Agency for Technology and Standards, was opened with the theme ‘Coping with Climate Change through Standards’. Around 700 people including Prime Minister WoonChan Jung, government and industry representatives, and standard experts participated in the event in which 12 companies, public institutions, and other organizations were awarded for contributing to the development of national standards.
Siemens is the first foreign company to win a national standardization award and the only foreign company among this year’s winners. The company was selected to receive the president’s award in recognition of its contribution to the development of Korea’s national standards by introducing its global expertise and experience in technology standards to various local industrial fields such as manufacturing technology, transportation, smart grid, etc.
In the home and building control sector, Siemens is working to spread the use of a standardized communication standard and to introduce it as a national standard by revealing a manufacturing technology certified by the ISO/IEC and publishing a Korean technology handbook. For public safety, Siemens introduced the concept of “safety communication”, which utilizes reliable automation communication technology to prevent accidents that occur due to system errors. Siemens published a Korean book on “safety communication”, and the technology was adopted as a national standard in 2007.
Siemens also introduced a high-tech hybrid electric bus that saves 30% energy compared to previous models and also reduces noise, and is currently cooperating with local companies to spread this technology as a public sector standard. Meanwhile, Siemens’ standard and technology experts participated in local standardization seminars in order to introduce related trends and new technologies. In addition, Siemens is actively participating in standardization activities initiated by national standard organizations that promote the Korean industry’s green growth.
Josef Meilinger, President of Siemens Ltd. Seoul, stated in his acceptance speech, “Siemens is a standard pioneer who suggested technology standardization for the first time in 1899 and has contributed to the enhancement of global economy and welfare ever since by spreading its innovative technology and know-how across the world,” and added, “It is a great honor to be recognized by the Korean market and rewarded with the president’s award on World Standards Day. We will continue our efforts in promoting national competitiveness by enhancing the local industry’s technological innovation and productivity as a national standardization leader.”
Meanwhile, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) designated October 14 as ‘World Standards Day’ in 1970. The Korean government started celebrating this day in 2000 by holding the ‘World Standards Day Ceremony’ and annually awards individuals and organizations that contribute to the local industry by developing standards.
